My 7 year old son (Grade 2) told me about this series of books. His teacher had been reading them to the class and he would always come home excited when one concluded and the next began. I decided to check them out at the library just to see what they were about and was actually a bit surprised that the teacher would be reading them to the class. I would place them in a grey area between appropriate and inappropriate. The main character is far from a role model- the books start out with "My name is A. J. and I hate school." and then he continues to talk about how he hates an annoying girl named Andrea.
I believe the appeal of these books in the eyes of the young reader is the utter shock value of the content. They are not a typical children's book and that in part with the fact that they are written from the perspective of a 2nd grader is what gets their attention and keeps it. To a kid they are the real thing. The author is quite clever. The name of the school is Ell Mentry School for example, the titles are brilliant and truthfully the books are quite hilarious (even for an adult), if you are open minded and can get beyond the words or content that would normally be taboo in a children's book!
It was a difficult decision to make whether or not to peruse these books for my son. When he borrowed one from the library and started reading it out loud to us- I had to stop him from reading the correct words in front of his 4 year old brother, who after listening, decided that he hated school too (eek- and he's only preschool- lol- thankfully it was a short phase) We replaced "hate" with "like" (and believe me the word is used a lot!) After a day or two we just stopped letting him read them aloud period as much of the content was inappropriate for a preschooler anyway.
