Aquaman Vol. 3: Throne of Atlantis

Author: Geoff Johns | Language: English | ISBN: B00ET887EU | Format: EPUB

Aquaman Vol. 3: Throne of Atlantis Description

Atlantis attacks! Aquaman, long having since severed ties with his people, watches as as armies rise from the water and attack the surface world. The Justice League--Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and Cyborg--answer the call, defending the shores from the invading Atlantean hordes.

But whose side is Aquaman on? With his brother Orm at the head of the undersea army, will Aquman choose to side with his Earth-bound superteam? Or his own people?

From the critically acclaimed creative team behind BLACKEST NIGHT Geoff Johns and Paul Pelletier, AQUAMAN VOLUME 3 is the newest chapter in this best-selling series. This volume collects issues #14-18.

The content in this collection isn't the issue as much as is the collection itself. This problem pertains to a specific kind of collector, and a lot of you can overlook this review, especially if you are just looking to read the ToA story without regards to your greater collection. The actual Throne of Atlantis story is fun enough, well drawn and memorable. The problem lies in the overlap with the sister title of the crossover, Justice League, also written by Johns. If you are one of those people (like me) who are collecting certain HC's in order, than you will have a serious overlap problem with Aquaman and Justice League.

Aquaman volume 3 contains Aquaman #0, #14-16, and JL #15-17. Justice League volume 3 contains Aquaman #14-16 and JL #13-17. So, if you buy both, you are essentially spending your Aquaman money on Aquaman #0, and that's it. Otherwise, the books are nearly identical, with the exception of the 0 issue and the short 2 issue Cheetah arc in JL. To make matters worse, each volume is numbered on the spine as the third volume of the line, as opposed to something like Batman's Night of the Owls crossover collection, which is unnumbered. So if you are collecting both JL and Aquaman, you either get to buy both volumes and know that you are buying a lot of the same material, or skip one, leaving a number gap on your bookshelf, which I know bugs some people.

Again, nothing against the story. I just wish DC was a little more upfront with the reprinting shenanigans.

I have to say that Geoff Johns' writing is a bit "hit and miss" for me, and I am far from a fan of his writing. But I absolutely love what he has done with the Aquaman character. Each of the three released graphic novels that release Mr. Johns' work are extraordinarily well written, and are stories that truly showcase Aquaman unlike any other writer has.

Geoff Johns' writing is what I would personally call the "Quintessential" Aquaman storyline(s), and in my opinion, better than any other writing on the Aquaman series to date. Aquaman has had a long, and sometimes tumultuous run in comics, and I fell that Geoff Johns' writing has changed that.

I don't know that I will continue to read the series beyond his run, as I don't know that many other writers out there can follow up on Mr. Johns' work aside from talents like Jeff LeMaire or Scott Snyder, neither of which I honestly see writing Aquaman anytime soon.

If you are an Aquaman fan, a Reluctant Aquaman fan, a Closet Aquaman fan, or just want to read an excellent storyline, I would suggest picking up all three Aquaman graphic novels:

Aquaman Vol. 1: The Trench
Aquaman Vol. 2: The Others
Aquaman Vol. 3: Throne of Atlantis
