You won’t want to miss this latest book in the delightful “Cat in the Stacks Mystery” series! Charlie, a librarian and the owner of Diesel, a Maine Coon cat that he had rescued, are well-known in their little town of Athena, Mississippi. Charlie doesn’t often go anywhere without Diesel, whose chatter, affection, and protection for his owner continues to charm the hearts of readers and steal more than his share of the scenes.
Charlie, his son, and his daughter have grown together into wonderful relationship with each other as well as each having found love and potential life partners. His son, Sean, practices law in Athena and the two of them often work together when mysteries seem to find Charlie to be solved.
Charlie and Teresa, Director of the Athena Public Library where he volunteers one of the days that he is not at the college library, are preparing displays for National Library Week when Teresa learns that Electra Barnes Cartright, the 100 year old author of the Veronica Thane mystery series is still alive. Teresa convinces Electra to speak at the library during the celebration week even as Charlie is preparing several early-edition mysteries written for teen boys and girls in decades past.
It was such a treat to be reminded of the mystery series that I loved when growing up – Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames, Trixie Beldon! Included in this novel are excerpts from ‘The Mystery at Spellwood Mansion’, first of the series of books about Veronica Thane, was reminiscent of Nancy Drew as Charlie re-read the mystery in the novel and spent time with Electra Barnes Cartwright. The terms “roadster” and “chum”, while little-used today, bring fond memories of mysteries past.
