I will start by saying that the product description provided here on Amazon is absolutely correct and quite comprehensive...it is spot on. Read it and you will know precisely what you are getting.
There are a very large number of books...very, very large books, on the market today to help the young woman or man in taking the dreaded ASVAB Examination. My grandson is one of them and has a pile of these books (he lives with us) in his room near his computer. Now all of these books are indeed extremely useful and I most certainly encourage any young person to lay their hands on as many of them as possible. This is not an easy test for many, in particular the mathematics portion of the test and you need as much help as you can get. I am retired military myself (Air Force) and when I first joined in 1962 the testing then was a far different animal that what the young people are faced with today.
Now the one big advantage that the book being reviewed here has over many competing books is that this one is far, far more user friendly and is much easier to navigate than almost any of the other six books we have in the house. This is important. Many of the other books, while wonderful pieces of work and quite helpful tend to intimidate the user immediately upon opening them. This is not a good thing.
I reviewed this particular book and found it easy to plow through and the tips the good sergeant has given in a liberal manner are spot on. I truly feel that if the young potential recruit actually works through this book, takes advantage of the on-line resources made available here, she or he will make great strides in coming up with a decent score on this test.
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude test is a broad-based test that covers a lot of ground. It not only covers those things you learned or are learning in high school, but "also measures your knowledge of mechanics, electronics, science, and assembling objects." In this book you'll be able to get a very close look at the nine subtests included in the ASVAB. Obviously you'll be working through some practice tests, but one of the more invaluable things in this book are the hints you'll receive. For example, those who are uncomfortable with tests will find hints like "(Almost) never select `never.' For the most part, answer options that are absolutes are incorrect. `Never,' `always,' and related words are often a sign that you should select a different answer." And on and on.
If you are thinking of joining the military and are a bit anxious about taking the ASVAB, this is an excellent text to pick up. Throughout the book you'll find little icons that will highlight additional information you'll need to pay attention to. They offer up tips, things you'll need to remember, examples, technical stuff, and offer up cautionary notes. For example, in part, one tip says "If you're stuck on a particular problem, sometimes plugging possible answers into an equation can help you find the right answer." In the back of the book is a thorough index, and appendices that match your ASVAB score to available jobs in the military.
