Rigorous Reading: 5 Access Points for Comprehending Complex Texts Description
"With Rigorous Reading Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey have provided literacy educators who are committed to successfully raising the bar with solutions that make sense. The book is masterfully developed with an extensive reach across many grade levels in terms of defining what it means to provide intentional instruction and teaching text complexity. The five access points are discussed pragmatically with evidence of a solid research base deftly woven throughout the book. This is the most practical book I have come across in terms of providing teachers with the knowledge base and assistance many are seeking to improve their instruction with regard to complex texts."
- Steven L. Layne, Ed.D., Professor of Literacy Education, Judson University, Elgin, IL

This book presents a powerful course of action for any teacher of complex texts -- English, Science, History, whatever. The greatest impact of these access points is that they push students to think at a very high level about the texts they have to untangle. Importantly, F&F's methodology strives to create a vibrant, risk free environment where students can tackle this thinking -- all the while allowing them to interact with each other, try out their ideas, and practice putting their thoughts in order so they can demonstrate that they understand the complex texts in front of them.

Rigorous Reading is the perfect book to accelerate the conversations about the work that will truly transform classroom, school, and district practices. First and foremost, I love that Fisher and Frey identify collaborative conversations as one of the five access points for comprehending complex texts. All too often, the speaking and listening standards are not emphasized, as they infrequently appear on standardized tests. However, Fisher and Frey illustrate that collaborative conversations are essential to doing the reading and writing work. The videos that can be accessed via QR codes in this section demonstrate the importance of teaching students to have a collaborative conversation and the magic that occurs once students know how to have a collaborative conversation!
Fisher and Frey also provide rich information about close, scaffolded reading. Close reading is quite a buzz phrase these days, but Fisher and Frey masterfully discuss a close and scaffolded reading. This is especially helpful as teachers consider how to help students navigate complex texts.
