The Nursing Mother's Companion - 6th Edition Description
Breastfeeding is natural, but it is not entirely instinctive for either mothers or babies. The Nursing Mother’s Companion has been among the best-selling books on breastfeeding for 25 years, and is respected and recommended by professionals and well loved by new parents for its encouraging and accessible style. Kathleen Huggins equips breastfeeding mothers with all the information they need to overcome potential difficulties and nurse their babies successfully from the first week through the toddler years, or somewhere in between.
This fully updated and extensively revised edition provides new information on topics such as:
• Nursing after a cesarean
• How to resume breastfeeding after weaning (relactation)
• Nursing a “near-term” (3–to–5 weeks premature) baby
• Treating postpartum headaches and nausea
• Nutritional supplements to alleviate postpartum depression
• Sharing a baby with baby (co-sleeping) and the risk of SIDS
• Introducing solid foods
• Expressing, storing, and feeding breast milk
• Reviews of breast pumps
Readers will also find Huggins’s indispensable problem-solving “survival guides,” set off by colored bands on the pages for quick reference, as well as appendices on determining baby’s milk needs in the first six weeks and the safety of various drugs during breast-feeding. Now more than ever, The Nursing Mother’s Companion is the go-to guide every new mother should have at hand.

I got this book when my baby was about 6 weeks old. I wish I had had it while I was pregnant. The breastfeeding references recommended to me spent too much time preaching that one should breastfeed. I needed much less WHY since I had already determined that I would do it and much more of the HOW. This book gives the HOW in clear, straightforward language. If you run into any problems, this book gives you the steps to work through them. It also has up-to-date reviews of products like pumps.

I ordered this book because it was so highly recommended in our breastfeeding and childbirth preparation classes, but was not exactly thrilled to have yet another breastfeeding book to read. However, it turned out to be a very good purchase, and I would definitely recommend this book to any soon to be or new to breastfeeding parents.
Overall, I was very pleased with this purchase. This book contains lots of helpful information for the preparation of a new baby as well as understanding breastfeeding and all that it will entail. As a first time mom, I found this book very helpful in preparing me mentally for the job of breastfeeding as well as helping me understand all of the benefits that will come along with that for myself and my baby. I also think that it provides lots of helpful information for overcoming common obstacles and problem solutions. The format it is written in, is very easy to follow and very organized, yet still simple.
It provides important medical information in a way that is easy to read and understand without being too cumbersome. It also helps new parents understand what is normal, and what is cause for concern. I would recommend this book to any new parents or any parents that want a good reference manual written by the leading breastfeeding experts in the country.
